Repentance is the key to saving grace and sanctifying grace.

  • Saving grace is being declared Justified by God.
  • Sanctifying grace is being empowered to live for God apart from sin.

2 Corinthians 7:8-10

Worldly sorrow is fundamentally self centered! It revolves around the pain and embarrassment sin causes me rather than the offense and dishonor it is to God. Worldly sorrow is sorry for the consequences but not enough to change.

Godly sorrow is fundamentally God centered. It is a continual turning from a former way of thinking and living to the life God has for us.

2 Corinthians 7:11

The right kind of sorrow has a purpose:

  • Earnestness
  • Eagerness to clear yourself
  • Indignation
  • Alarm
  • Longing
  • Concern
  • Readiness

John 13:38

Mark 14:44-47

Matthew 27:3-5

Worldly sorrow lacks repentance which chokes out every opportunity for grace and redemption.

God intends sorrow to work for you not against you.

  • Godly sorrow leads us toward community.
    John 21:15
  • Godly sorrow leads us toward Jesus.
  • Godly sorrow leads us toward new life.
